All are welcome on our bird walks and activities, from beginner to experienced bird enthusiasts. We are a friendly and welcoming community, and you do not need to be a member of Yuma Audubon Society to participate. But in order to ensure everyone has the best experience and preserve wildlife for everyone's enjoyment, we ask that you adhere to these guidelines whether you are with us or are birdwatching on your own.
Observe birds and all wildlife from a respectful distance. Give wildlife plenty of space so they can continue resting, feeding, moving through, or behaving naturally.
Do not touch or feed wildlife. Touching wildlife can be fatal for the animal and can have legal consequences.
Avoid disturbing nests, roosting areas, or sensitive habitats.
Never chase, corner, throw objects at, or intentionally flush wildlife for a better view, photograph, or video.
Stay on designated trails whenever possible and avoid trampling vegetation.
Limit or avoid the use of recorded bird calls (playbacks), especially during breeding and nesting season.
Leave no trace and pack out all trash.
Speak softly and move quietly to avoid disturbing wildlife and help everyone enjoy birds and wildlife.
“Pishing” is allowed on our walks, but please use it responsibly and avoid excessive disturbance to birds.
Do not block the view of others during sightings.
If sharing a spotting scope, please allow others a chance to look as well.
If you spot a bird first, share the excitement by helping others find it.
The welfare of wildlife always comes before photographs.
Avoid disturbing animals or altering habitat (such as removing branches to expose a nest) for photography.
Respect the space and experience of other visitors and photographers.
Avoid disclosing locations of highly sought-after photos, such as owl nests or endangered species, on social media to avoid crowding, which may disturb and endanger the wildlife.
Wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for dirt or uneven trails.
Dress for the weather and consider wearing muted or earth-tone colors that blend into natural surroundings.
Layers are recommended for changing temperatures.
Bring water, sun protection, snacks, and insect repellent as needed.
By practicing respectful and ethical birding, we help protect and preserve the wildlife and habitats that make the Yuma region such a special place for everyone to explore and enjoy.
